Noah Adamtey, one of the Lawyers representing over 30 protesters arrested during the Democracy Hub demonstrations, has disclosed that Oliver Baker Vormawor, the lead protester, has been denied medical attention while in police custody.
Speaking on ABC’s “In The Morning” show on September 25, 2024, Adamtey expressed deep concern over Vormawor’s health, noting that despite his visible illness, the activist had not received any medical care.
“He was vomiting throughout the later part of the day.
Arrangements were made by his lawyers for a medical professional to visit, but the police did not allow the doctor to see him,” Adamtey recounted.
“As of 11 pm yesterday, Oliver had not been attended to,” Adamtey said, issuing a public plea to authorities to permit immediate medical intervention.
Adamtey further highlighted the poor conditions faced by other detainees, including a German citizen nursing a gunshot wound and pregnant women pleading for exemption.
“None of the people i saw yesterday was in any good condition.
“There was a German citizen. He has a gun shot he is nursing. He happen to be there when the protest was ongoing. All attempt to the state has proven futile.”
He revealed plans to file a petition to the Attorney General and involve the Minister for Gender and the Women’s Caucus in Parliament to intervene.
“We cannot subject the pregnant woman to the conditions of being in custody at Nsawam,” he stressed, reminding authorities of Ghanaian laws prohibiting the imprisonment of pregnant women.
Concerns has also risen as one of the protesters is reported diabetic and has been denied access to her medications.
The Democracy Hub protests, seek at drawing attention to illegal mining and economic mismanagement, saw 39 participants arrested and remanded in custody by the Accra Circuit Court.
Those detained have been charged with various crimes, including conspiracy to commit unlawful assembly and causing unlawful damage. Despite the charges, all defendants have pleaded not guilty, with their cases adjourned to October 8, 2024.
Lawyers for Vormawor are calling on the state to allow him the necessary medical care as his condition worsens.
