Oliver Barker-Vormawor, leader of the activist group Democracy Hub, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with recent protests in Accra.
The demonstrations, led by his group, caused major disruptions in the capital, including the obstruction of major roads.
Protesters aimed to bring attention to the country’s economic challenges and governance issues, sparking heightened tensions between demonstrators and law enforcement.
Earlier, over 20 protesters were arrested for what authorities described as “unlawful conduct.”
Barker-Vormawor, who had become a focal point of public attention, initially managed to avoid arrest.
However, his capture followed a police manhunt, marking a key development in the ongoing protests, which have drawn widespread national interest.
In a statement, the police accused Barker-Vormawor of inciting public disorder and leading the blockade of key roads, which they claim caused major inconveniences to commuters and disrupted daily activities in Accra.
As the activist group continues its push for reforms on economic and governance issues, tensions between law enforcement and demonstrators are expected to rise further.
Barker-Vormawor’s detention is likely to draw more attention to the group’s cause, even as the police remain firm in their response to what they describe as “unlawful” protest activities.
