Agro Research Scientist, Prof. Roger Kanton, has expressed strong support for the recent 70% increase in cocoa prices announced by the government, urging farmers to accept the adjustment as a step in the right direction.
Speaking on ABC in the Morning, Prof. Kanton emphasized that the price hike was a necessary measure, but he also pointed out the need for a more holistic approach to sustain the cocoa industry.
While he welcomed the price increase, Prof. Kanton raised concerns over the destruction of cocoa farms and the cutting down of trees.
“My problem is that cocoa farms are being destroyed, trees are being cut down, and that’s my fear. They should combine this price hike with other measures so that it is done in a systematic manner,” he noted.
He stressed that discussions around the cocoa industry should not only focus on price increases but also on ensuring the long-term viability of the industry through strategic countermeasures.
Prof. Kanton further argued that the role of COCOBOD should be reevaluated, advocating for its removal due to its perceived influence over where farmers can sell their produce.
“The discussion should not be limited to only an increment in prices when, again, you don’t have the product,” he stated.
He also acknowledged the costs incurred by the government in supporting the cocoa sector, noting that the price increase, while significant, was justified considering the logistical and financial challenges involved in transporting cocoa to ports for export.
