Political scientist Dr. Samuel Afriyie has called on former President John Agyekum Kufuor to intervene and help unify the New Patriotic Party (NPP), warning that growing internal divisions could threaten the party’s future.
Speaking in an interview with ABC News GH, Dr. Afriyie emphasized the importance of strong, unifying leadership as the NPP marks its first 120 days in opposition following its defeat in the 2024 elections.
“They need to have a unified leader to speak to,” he said.
Dr. Afriyie singled out President Kufuor as the ideal figure to lead reconciliation efforts within the party, describing him as a respected elder with the moral authority to mediate. “I will suggest President Kufuor.
He is the one that has the greatest respect… I believe he has the Jesus Christ attitude,” he stated.
He further explained that Kufuor’s distance from recent internal disputes makes him a credible and neutral figure who could bridge gaps among the party’s various factions.
The NPP has recently faced internal tension, with some factions blaming leadership missteps for the party’s electoral loss.
Dr. Afriyie believes the absence of a central unifying figure has worsened the situation.
He urged party stakeholders to look to Kufuor’s legacy of diplomacy and consensus-building as the foundation for a healing process, cautioning that the longer the disunity festers, the more it may damage the party’s ability to regroup for the next general elections.
