Ghanaian philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo has gifted a brand-new Hyundai Elantra to Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare after a viral video showed him commuting in a trotro. The video sparked widespread admiration, highlighting Asare’s humility despite his success.
Asare’s Rise to Prominence
Asare’s career seemed over after a devastating knee injury in 2023. However, with guidance from former Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Kingston, he made a remarkable comeback, joining Accra Hearts of Oak for the 2024-25 season. His stellar performances earned him a national team call-up in March 2024. The Hearts of Oak captain went on to serve as Ghana’s goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, keeping clean sheets in both games.
A Gesture of Appreciation and Inspiration
Agongo, known for his philanthropy, was moved by Asare’s humility. “Here is someone representing our nation at the highest level yet remaining so grounded. Such character deserves recognition,” he said. Asare was visibly emotional at the handover ceremony, expressing gratitude for Agongo’s kindness. “This is beyond my wildest dreams… I promise to honor this gift by continuing to give my best for Ghana.”
Head Coach of Accra Hearts of Oak, Aboubakar Ouattara, praised Seidu Agongo for the gesture and urged Benjamin Asare to avoid complacency. This story showcases twin virtues: Asare’s humility and Agongo’s generosity. As Asare prepares to represent Ghana in the upcoming Unity Cup, his journey continues to inspire a nation that values character and human connection.
