Former Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, has sounded the alarm on the country’s HIV/AIDS fight, warning that Ghana remains highly vulnerable due to its heavy reliance on foreign aid.
Speaking on ABC News GH on February 6, Dr. Atuahene cautioned that any disruption in foreign support could have catastrophic consequences for HIV/AIDS programs in the country.
“We have made progress, but Ghana still has a long way to go in closing the HIV/AIDS gap. The biggest threat we face is that our fight is largely dependent on foreign aid,” he stated.
He further revealed that some stakeholders have presented a proposal to the government, outlining alternative funding strategies should foreign aid diminish.
With growing concerns about sustainability, Dr. Atuahene’s warning raises fresh questions about Ghana’s preparedness to handle the HIV/AIDS crisis independently.
