The news of Chris Hughton’s dismissal as the head coach of the Ghana national football team, the Black Stars, has been met with approval by many football fans in Ghana. The decision, announced by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Tuesday, follows Ghana’s failure to advance to the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Hughton, appointed in January 2022, was entrusted with rejuvenating the team after a disappointing World Cup campaign in Qatar. However, the Black Stars experienced a first-round exit in the AFCON under his leadership.

Social media platforms became a sounding board for fans to express their agreement with the decision to sack Hughton. Ghana’s performances during the AFCON were inconsistent, culminating in a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, a draw with Egypt, and a dramatic loss of a two-goal lead against Mozambique in the final minutes of their must-win game.

GFA president and the executives, when are you resigning ?

— Mempeasem President (@AsieduMends) January 23, 2024

You sack Chris Houghton a coach which you didn't allow to work on his own. My question is, what is Kurt Okraku doing at post having failed as a GFA president. pic.twitter.com/hLAwHDjgJU

GFA sacked coach, dissolved technical team yet GFA president and some so called senior players are still there. Sad!!!

They needed someone to face the heat and save the day so they sacked Chris hughton . In a serious country Kurt okraku resigning would have been the first thing

— 30🏀 (@tony_grey_) January 24, 2024

Kurt Okraku and Dede Ayew have been the the only constant in all our embarrassing showing in previous tourneys

Sacking Chris Hughton is a quick fix. The bigger fix is getting Kurt Okraku out too.#KurtOkrakuOut #KurtMustGo

— Jude Duncan (@mensaduncan) January 24, 2024

As usual, they take the easiest and cheapest decision that do not require them to think. Meanwhile, the problem is @kurtokraku@ghanafaofficial dissolves the technical team of the Black Stars zzibcluding relieving Chris Hughton off his Position as Head coach of Black Stars pic.twitter.com/98BheskiK0

— Chief Seidu Adamu 🇬🇭 (@Chiefseiduadamu) January 23, 2024

The team’s elimination was confirmed after Cameroon came from behind to beat Gambia. Hughton’s dismissal is seen as an expected move given the team’s poor performance and the mounting pressure on the Ghana Football Association to address the situation.

The search for a new coach is expected to commence promptly, with various names being circulated as potential candidates. The new coach will face the challenge of rebuilding the team and restoring its reputation as a prominent force in African football.
