Greater Accra and the Ashanti Region are projected to remain Ghana’s most populous regions, with each expected to exceed 7.5 million residents by 2050.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census Thematic Report on Population Projections, these regions will continue to be significant population centers, shaping the country’s demographic landscape.
The report also indicates that the Northern, North East, and Savannah regions will experience the highest growth rates, with their populations set to double by 2050.
” At the regional level, Greater Accra and Ashanti regions are expected to remain the two most populous regions, each with projected populations above 7.5 million by 2050. The Northern, North East and Savannah regions are projected to experience the highest growth rates and their populations are estimated to double by 2050,” the release indicated.
The demographic trends indicate a shift towards increased urbanization, with more than half of Ghana’s regions expected to be urban by 2030.
Currently, regions like Volta, Oti, Western North, North East, Upper West, Savannah, and Upper East are projected to remain predominantly rural by the end of the decade.
This data, released in conjunction with World Population Day, emphasizes the need for inclusive and strategic planning to ensure a resilient and equitable future for all Ghanaians.
