Gunfire has disrupted activities at the Ledzokuku Collation Centre, causing delays in the vote counting process.
The circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear.
According to reports from ABC News GH’s Ledzokuku correspondent, tensions escalated over a disagreement between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters about the order of receiving electoral materials.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and officials are continuing with the collation of results from polling centres.
Provisional results suggest that the NDC’s incumbent, Benjamin Nartey Ayiku, has retained his seat, defeating the NPP’s Bernard Okoe-Boye for the second consecutive time.
This follows Okoe-Boye’s earlier loss to Ayiku in the 2020 elections.
In a related development, the National Peace Council (NPC) has issued a statement urging political parties to withdraw their supporters from collation centres nationwide.
This follows concerns that the presence of party supporters at these centres could impede the work of electoral officers, delay results, and heighten tensions.
The NPC, in collaboration with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) and other partners in the Election Situation Room, called on political parties to allow Electoral Commission officials to carry out their duties without interference.
The Council emphasized the need for restraint and adherence to electoral rules, encouraging all stakeholders to work towards a peaceful and credible election process.
