First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Smith Danquah Buttey, has announced that he will not contest for his position again, admitting that he feels he has failed in his role after the party lost power.

Speaking in an interview with ABC News GH, Mr. Buttey said he has made it clear that he would not seek re-election, stressing that his decision stems from personal reflection and the party’s inability to retain government.

“I have said it severally that I won’t contest again,” he stated. “I went for this position because I wanted the party to remain in power. We did not, so in my opinion I think I have failed.”

Mr. Buttey explained that his motive for joining the national executive team was to help the NPP secure victory, and if that goal was not achieved, it is only right for him to step aside.

“I am here for victory. If the victory didn’t come, I should step aside for somebody else to come. Maybe my ideas and my strategy didn’t work, so I have to give way for another person to come,” he said.

Despite his decision not to run again, the First Vice Chairman pledged his continued support for the party in every capacity—financial, intellectual, and strategic.

“I will support the party alright with all that I have—my knowledge, my money, everything that I am supposed to do for this party to come to power, I will do,” he assured.
