Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has reaffirmed his dedication to maintaining peace in Ghana as the country approaches the 2024 general elections.
The assurance came during a courtesy visit by the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), which included teachers and pupils, to Parliament.
The delegation, led by GNACOPS’ national executive director, Obento Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, emphasized the importance of peace and unity in this critical period and urged the Speaker to leverage his influence to ensure a harmonious electoral process.
In response, Speaker Bagbin expressed his unwavering commitment to upholding peace, stating, “I’m more than committed to the peace of this nation.”
He noted that in celebration of 30 years of Ghana’s parliamentary democracy, he had organized a seminary lecture in Tamale to highlight the value of peace and include expert discussions aimed at fostering national cohesion.
He also mentioned the “Democracy Cup” initiative, which used the country’s love for football as a medium to promote the message of peace.
Mr. Bagbin lauded GNACOPS for their proactive role in spreading the peace message, particularly to young learners who are the future leaders of the nation. He stressed that nurturing this commitment in youth is vital, as it aligns with the principle that “the foundation of life is peace.”
