The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a public statement regarding an alarming surge in job recruitment scams, urging citizens to remain vigilant and exercise caution when receiving unsolicited job offers.
The CSA revealed that the scams have resulted in a documented loss of over GH¢124,000, with 15 reported cases detailing fraudulent activities related to job recruitment.
According to the CSA’s press statement, scammers have adopted a sophisticated approach by masquerading as recruiters and inundating the public with unsolicited messages via various communication channels, including SMS, emails, WhatsApp, and Telegram. The messages entice individuals with promises of high-paying remote or part-time job opportunities, often involving digital tasks such as liking social media posts and providing referrals.
The victims, attracted by seemingly legitimate offers and relatively low payments for completed tasks, soon found themselves ensnared in the elaborate scam. The CSA highlighted that after making initial cash deposits, victims were promised more lucrative tasks, only to be abruptly locked out of their accounts, rendering them unable to contact the scammers and leaving them without the anticipated large payouts.
Furthermore, the CSA urged citizens to approach unsolicited job messages with caution, particularly those promising high-paying roles with minimal effort. The authority advised the public to verify job advertisements directly through official company channels to ensure legitimacy and avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
The CSA offered a key piece of advice in their statement: “If it seems too good to be true, it is likely a scam.”
