A three-day protest commenced today, October 3, in Accra, as activists rallied for the immediate release of 53 Democracy Hub protesters arrested during an anti-galamsey demonstration last week.
The movement, organized under the banners “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” seeks to draw attention to the severe environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which has been a pressing issue in Ghana.
Live updates show a growing crowd of passionate protesters converging in Shanghai near Spanner Accra.
The demonstration is set to run until October 5 and will begin at Legon Okponglo, proceeding to the Black Star Square via a police-approved route.
Key locations along the march include Legon Stadium, Okponglo Traffic Light, Shiashie, Shangri-La, and Airport Traffic Light, before culminating at the Independence Square.
Activists have taken to social media to mobilize support, anticipating thousands to join the protest and voice their concerns over both the arrests and the ongoing fight against illegal mining.
In response to the protest, the Ghana Police Service issued a warning, stating that they will disperse any crowds if there are reasonable grounds to believe that the demonstration could lead to a breach of peace.
Despite this, the activists remain resolute in their mission, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the ongoing environmental degradation and calling for justice for their fellow protesters.
