The Public Accounts Committee has directed the Ministry of Education to pursue the State Insurance Company for the insured value of a missing Toyota Hilux vehicle, less a 10% deductible.
This directive follows the ministry’s failure to follow up on the stolen vehicle, which had been assigned to the Central Regional Coordinator of the Free Senior High School, Mr. Kingsley Opoku Agyeman.
The vehicle was reported stolen at gunpoint in 2018 during an unofficial trip with the vehicle.
“After you have received that money, the difference between that and the current cost of the vehicle should be covered by Mr. Opoku Agyeman,” the Committee ruled, emphasizing the accountability of the Ministry and Mr. Agyeman in addressing the financial shortfall.
This decision underscores the Committee’s commitment to ensuring that public resources are properly managed and recovered where possible.
Representing the Ministry of Education during the Public Accounts Committee sitting on Thursday, August 1, 2024, was Mameley Andrew, the Chief Director.
The directive comes on the heels of the Attorney General’s 2023 report, which highlighted the ministry’s oversight in not filing an insurance claim for the stolen vehicle.
The report’s findings prompted the Committee to take swift action to rectify the lapse and recover the funds.
