The National Identification Authority (NIA) has withheld over 110,000 Ghana Cards following revelations of double registration, stirring political tensions nationwide.
Executive Secretary of the NIA, Prof. Kenneth Agyeman Attafuah, appeared before Parliament’s Assurance Committee to disclose this alarming development, highlighting the systemic issue of multiple registrations.
With more than 18 million cards issued to date, the move has raised questions about the transparency and integrity of the national identification process.
Prof. Attafuah confirmed that the total number of unissued cards stands at 559,457, with 150,896 ready to be printed. However, the 110,936 cases of double registration have triggered a rigorous investigation.
The withheld cards have ignited a debate over whether the NIA’s handling of the situation is politically motivated, especially as the country prepares for upcoming elections.
Critics argue that the move could disenfranchise many citizens, potentially skewing voter demographics.
“The total number of Ghanaians who have attempted multiple registrations, whose cards have gone into delinquency and are being investigated, is 110,936,” Prof. Attafuah stated.
