Delegates at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Delegates Conference on Saturday, July 19, firmly rejected two proposed constitutional amendments aimed at redefining internal structures and age definitions within the party.
Held at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, the conference saw Motion 17 and Motion 54 voted down after intense deliberations.
Motion 17 sought to revise Article 7(30) to permit Regional Executive Committees to appoint persons — excluding Polling Station, Electoral Area, and Constituency officers — as supervisors for Polling Station and Electoral Area elections.
Delegates, however, opposed the measure, citing concerns it could undermine grassroots involvement and lead to potential bias or reduced local oversight.
Similarly, Motion 54 proposed amending Article 15(4) to reduce the age definition of “Youth” from the current 40 years to 35 years.
While the proposal aligned with international and national youth definitions, such as Ghana’s National Youth Authority Act and the African Youth Charter, delegates declined the change, thereby retaining the existing ceiling of 40 years for youth classification within the party.
