A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Kingsley Basintale, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as attempts to defend alleged criminal activities involving members of the party.
Reacting to the NPP’s Democracy Under Attack demonstration, Basintale said it was unfortunate for leaders of an opposition party to defend actions he believes should be left to the appropriate legal processes.
“It’s sad as a nation if you have leaders of the opposition party (NPP) defending crime like their lives depended on it. Allow the law to take its course and leave the Judicial Service devoid of politics,” he said.
Basintale also rejected claims that democratic freedoms should be used as a shield against accountability, arguing that democracy does not permit individuals to escape responsibility for alleged wrongdoing.
“Democracy isn’t freedom to loot and go scot-free. Democracy isn’t freedom to cause financial loss to the state and go scot-free. Democracy isn’t freedom to threaten the President and go scot-free,” he stated.
The NDC communicator urged the NPP leadership to focus on educating its members about lawful conduct rather than defending individuals facing allegations.
“Stop defending criminal activities, shift your attention to advising and teaching all party members on how to be law-abiding citizens. Ignorance of the law isn’t an excuse,” he added.
Basintale concluded by emphasising that criminal acts should not have a place in Ghana’s society, stating: “Crime has no place in our country.”
His comments come amid heightened political exchanges following the NPP’s demonstration over concerns about what the party describes as selective justice and alleged political persecution of its members.
