Political Scientist at Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Samuel Afriyie, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to offer an unqualified apology to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, describing him as a pillar of wisdom whose experience and legacy must be valued, not sidelined.

According to Dr. Afriyie, the party must urgently reconcile with the statesman, whose contributions to the NPP and Ghana’s development remain unmatched. “His knowledge and leadership are vital to the party’s growth and future,” he said on ABC Morning.

Dr. Afriyie, however, expressed his disappointment with the manner in which President Kufuor chose to air his grievances, suggesting that such matters would have been better addressed through internal mechanisms.

“I think that he could have made this statement rather through the Council of Elders or other medium,” he stated, emphasising the importance of protecting party unity and image, especially ahead of major electoral contests.

He urged party structures to create space for senior figures to speak freely and be heard respectfully within the party framework.

The comments follow recent public remarks by President Kufuor, who revealed his growing detachment from the NPP, citing a lack of inclusion in party affairs.

Dr. Afriyie believes this revelation, while significant, also points to a deeper internal rift that must be addressed through dialogue and humility.

“The NPP cannot afford to alienate its elder statesmen. Rebuilding trust and showing respect to former President Kufuor is not just a moral duty—it is a strategic necessity,” he added.
