The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on its members to remain disciplined and focused on holding the government accountable following what it describes as an increasing pattern of arrests involving members of the party.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 23, 2026 and signed by the party’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP expressed concern over what it said were frequent arrests of opposition members under the John Mahama administration.

According to the party, the arrests do not appear to be isolated incidents but rather form part of what it described as a broader effort to harass and weaken the opposition.

While appealing to President John Dramani Mahama to discourage what it termed the arrest and harassment of its members, the NPP urged party supporters to avoid actions that could distract from issues of national concern.

“We urge every member of our party to remain disciplined, measured and focused on the issues,” the statement said, adding that the government appeared eager to seize every opportunity to divert public attention from its performance.

The NPP maintained that Ghanaians are more concerned about the rising cost of living, youth unemployment, governance, judicial independence and what it described as the government’s failure to fulfil key manifesto promises.

The party stressed that these are the issues that deserve public attention and should remain the focus of political discourse.

The statement further cautioned party members against engaging in insults or inflammatory rhetoric, saying such conduct weakens the party’s message and shifts attention away from matters affecting the country.

Instead, the NPP called for the use of facts, evidence and disciplined advocacy in scrutinising the government’s performance.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to holding the Mahama administration accountable and pledged to continue advocating for what it said are the interests of millions of Ghanaians seeking improved governance and better national outcomes.

The statement comes amid heightened political tensions and ongoing public debate over the arrest of some opposition figures with the NPP insisting that democratic accountability and respect for political freedoms remain essential to Ghana’s constitutional democracy.
