The National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National First Vice Chairman of the party, outlining an ambitious vision centered on unity, discipline, accountability and institutional renewal.

In a declaration of intent released ahead of the party’s National Delegates Conference scheduled for September 19, 2026, Mr. Ahiagbah said the NPP stands at a defining moment following the outcome of the 2024 general elections and must rebuild with renewed purpose to remain Ghana’s leading political force.

Reflecting on the party’s historical roots, he recalled the founding tradition established at Saltpond in 1947, describing it as one founded on liberty, the rule of law, democracy and free market principles that continue to shape the party’s identity.

“The 2024 election revealed that we need to reflect and move forward with renewed energy,” he stated, stressing that the strength of the NPP lies not only in its rich history but also in its ability to renew its values, strengthen its structures and work together as a disciplined and united political organization.

Mr. Ahiagbah expressed confidence that the NPP remains the best vehicle for delivering prosperity, strong leadership and good governance for Ghana adding that his decision to seek the office of National First Vice Chairman is driven by a commitment to reposition the party for future electoral success.

He emphasized that if elected, he would work closely with the National Chairman to reinforce party discipline, strengthen grassroots structures and deepen accountability across all levels of the organization.

According to him, a disciplined leadership is essential to rebuilding cohesion within the party and preparing it to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.

“As National First Vice Chairman, I will work to unite our party and uphold discipline, accountability and commitment to our founding ideals,” he noted.

Mr. Ahiagbah also outlined five key priorities that would guide his leadership:

Renew the NPP’s liberal conservative values and reconnect the party with its founding ideals.

Strengthen party structures while empowering administration at every level.

Promote discipline, accountability and mutual respect as the foundation of party unity.

Encourage inclusion and ensure every member feels valued and heard.

Support the National Chairman in building a united, disciplined and election ready party.

He further noted that the NPP’s mission extends beyond winning elections, saying the party must continue to position itself as the preferred political movement for all Ghanaians by championing opportunity, enterprise, democratic governance and the rule of law.

Mr. Ahiagbah said Ghanaians are increasingly looking for leaders who possess integrity, discipline and the ability to unite people behind a common vision, qualities he believes he brings to the contest.

He therefore appealed to delegates to entrust him with the mandate during the September 19 National Delegates Conference, promising to serve with humility, dedication and unwavering commitment to the party’s founding principles.

His declaration officially adds him to the race for one of the NPP’s top national executive positions as the party prepares to elect new national officers to steer its affairs and chart a course toward the 2028 general elections.
