Member of the NDC Communications Team, Ibrahim Ali, has defended the government’s evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa amid renewed xenophobic tensions, while accusing the opposition NPP of hypocrisy over calls for accountability.

Speaking on ABC In The Morning on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Ibrahim Ali argued that the previous Akufo-Addo administration failed to take decisive action during similar xenophobic attacks in 2019.

According to him, while several African countries, including Nigeria, moved swiftly to repatriate their citizens from South Africa during the 2019 unrest, Ghana under former President Nana Akufo-Addo did not undertake any major evacuation effort for affected Ghanaians.

“While other African countries like Nigeria and others were putting measures in place to repatriate their citizens from South Africa, President Akufo-Addo at the time in 2019 didn’t take any major step in repatriating Ghanaians from South Africa,” he stated.

He maintained that the current NDC administration has demonstrated leadership by taking concrete steps to evacuate stranded Ghanaians and ensure their safety.

“All these interventions the government of Ghana today has decided to do were not done by the previous Akufo-Addo administration,” he said.

Ibrahim Ali further criticized the NPP for questioning the government’s handling of the evacuation exercise, insisting the opposition lacks the moral authority to demand accountability after what he described as its own failures while in office.

“Something you as a party did not fix and were not able to do, the NDC has done it, and you are seeking accountability?” he questioned.

He also took a swipe at the NPP, saying, “You people have no shame,” while stressing that the current administration has remained transparent in its expenditure since assuming office.

“Every pesewa we have spent since we came into office, we have been accountable for it,” he added.

He also noted that the NPP “does not have the moral right” to lecture the NDC government on accountability regarding the evacuation exercise.

Ibrahim Ali’s comments add to the ongoing political debate over the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks against Africans in the country.
