Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has justified the recent introduction of a GH¢1.00 petroleum levy, describing it as a necessary and timely intervention to stabilise Ghana’s energy sector.
Speaking on Joy FM on Wednesday, June 4, Mr. Jinapor explained that the government deliberately delayed introducing the levy until fuel prices dropped to more manageable levels.
He noted that when the government assumed office, fuel prices were as high as GH¢16.00 per litre, making any additional charges untenable for consumers.
However, with prices now reduced to around GH¢13.00 per litre, the Minister argued that the levy could be introduced without overburdening the public.
Despite strong opposition from New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs following the levy’s approval in Parliament on June 3, Jinapor insisted the move will fund critical infrastructure and operational investments, ensuring sustainable and reliable energy supply.
He further assured Ghanaians of the government’s commitment to accountability in the use of the levy’s proceeds.
