US President Donald Trump has proposed replacing the term “Artificial Intelligence” with “Super Intelligence” in US government documents, arguing that the word “artificial” gives the technology an inaccurate impression.
Trump made the remarks on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, while addressing the High-Level General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
He also rejected efforts to establish a global framework for controlling the development and use of artificial intelligence, saying the United States would not support such an arrangement.
“Artificial Intelligence will be renamed ‘super intelligence’ in all U.S. documents. The United States also totally rejects any attempt to construct a global scheme to control the artificial intelligence being spoken of so much now, hereinafter called super intelligence,” he said.
Explaining his proposed terminology, Trump said the word “artificial” could make the technology appear less genuine than he believes it is.
“The use of the word artificial makes intelligence sound fake. It is not fake. It’s actually amazing,” he said.
Trump acknowledged that the development and use of the technology would require caution but maintained that “super intelligence” better captures its capabilities.
“From this point forward, all of the United States documents and, hopefully, the world’s will be changed to use the much more accurate term super as opposed to artificial.
“In other words, welcome to the new world of super intelligence. Let’s see if that goes. It sounds much better. It is much better, and it’s much more accurate,” he added.
The remarks came as world leaders gathered at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the opening of the High-Level General Debate of the 81st session of the General Assembly.
The 2026 General Debate is being held from September 22 to 26 and on September 28 under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
