Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the renowned Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, has reportedly passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving medical care.

His passing comes barely a month after the death of Maame Tiwa, a key pillar and long-serving member of the Asomafo music group, a loss that deeply shook the gospel music fraternity and the Asomafo family in particular.

Yaw Sarpong had, for several years, battled ill health, which occasionally compelled him to step back from active public performances as he focused on treatment and recovery.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of Ghanaian gospel music, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence as the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo. The group played a pivotal role in shaping modern Akan gospel music, becoming known for its rich lyrical depth, disciplined musical arrangement, and firm grounding in Christian doctrine.

Over the decades, Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo produced numerous iconic gospel songs, including Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa. Many of these songs remain enduring favourites in churches across Ghana and continue to inspire worshippers.

In recognition of his immense contribution to gospel music, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

His death marks the end of an era in Ghana’s gospel music scene, leaving behind a rich legacy that will continue to influence generations of gospel musicians and worshippers alike.
