Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has announced that parliamentary candidates whose results were annulled by the Supreme Court on December 27, 2024, will not be sworn in as Members of Parliament on January 6, 2025.
He stated that the apex court’s ruling invalidated their declarations, rendering them ineligible to take office.
The Supreme Court nullified re-collated results for the Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Techiman South constituencies, citing irregularities in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) process.
The court deemed the re-collation lacked the necessary transparency and fairness.
This decision followed a National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal challenge against a High Court directive on December 20, which instructed the EC to re-collate results in nine disputed constituencies.
Addressing Parliament in Accra, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the Supreme Court’s alignment with his stance on the issue.
“To become a Member of Parliament, you must be elected by the voters and declared by the Electoral Commission. The decision of the Supreme Court just followed the position I took before they delivered their ruling,” he noted.
