The United Movement for Development (UMD) has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama, calling for the removal of Professor Kwasi Prempeh as Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee.

The group alleges that Prof. Prempeh is an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, which they claim goes against Ghanaian cultural values.

In a letter dated January 27, 2025, and addressed to the President, the UMD describes itself as a coalition of Ghanaian citizens and associations committed to inclusive and accountable governance. The group congratulated the President on his electoral victory but expressed concern over what they describe as a disregard for Ghanaian values.

The petition states, “Prof. Kwasi Prempeh is nothing less than a champion and idol for LGBTQ+ practitioners.

Elevation by appointing him to chair the Constitutional Review Committee and propose amendments for over 33 million Ghanaians who oppose his ideology would be an endorsement of his unacceptable agenda.”

The UMD argues that his leadership of the committee could embolden LGBTQ+ activists and plunge the nation into what they term as “further moral and cultural decay.”

The group is calling on the President to remove Prof. Prempeh from his position and replace him with Justice William Atuguba, a retired Supreme Court judge.

The petition highlights Justice Atuguba’s “distinguished 22-year tenure on the Supreme Court” and describes him as an individual whose “deep expertise in constitutional law, unwavering commitment to the rule of law, and alignment with the cultural and moral values cherished by Ghanaians” make him a suitable candidate.

The letter was signed by Abraham Klutsey, Convener for UMD and a human rights advocate. It was also copied to several key figures, including the Speaker of Parliament, religious leaders, and professional associations.
