The Japanese Ambassador’s Championship 2026 will take place this weekend, Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th October, at the Hathramani Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium.
The competition will feature Kendo, Karate, Judo and Jujutsu, under the theme, “Cultivating Discipline, Focus and Character through Kendo, Karate, Judo and Jujutsu – One Spirit.”

Activities will begin at 9 a.m. on both days, following weigh-in procedures, with Karate and Judo contests scheduled for Saturday before Kendo and Jujutsu take over on Sunday. Admission is free.
The Japanese Ambassador, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, speaking at a press briefing ahead of the event, said the championship seeks to highlight the broader benefits of martial arts, particularly in promoting discipline, teamwork, mutual respect and integrity among young people.
He reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting the development of the four martial arts federations in Ghana, noting that more than 40 athletes are expected to participate in this year’s edition, reflecting growth compared with previous competitions.
The championship is expected to showcase experienced competitors alongside emerging talents, offering spectators an opportunity to experience the different techniques and traditions associated with the four disciplines.
Representatives of the participating federations also appealed for increased corporate sponsorship to enable the competition to be held quarterly. They said more regular competitions would help athletes maintain their fitness and competitive readiness for international events, including African championships and the Olympic Games.
As part of efforts to deepen sporting and cultural relations between Ghana and Japan, the Embassy further announced plans to organise a martial arts showcase at the Osaka Expo in November.
The two – day event is expected to bring together athletes, Ghana Olympic Committee, National Sports Authority, relevant national federations, schools, parents, martial arts enthusiasts and corporate organisations, while reinforcing the role of sport in promoting discipline, cultural exchange and stronger ties between Ghana and Japan.
