Tensions have reached a boiling point in Ashaiman as furious residents took to the streets to protest the exclusion of their Member of Parliament, Ernest Norgbey, from President John Mahama’s ministerial appointments.
The anger escalated into chaos when demonstrators vandalized the office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Chairman, setting tyres ablaze and damaging property.
Earlier in the day, the aggrieved constituents had planned to block the Tema Motorway in a large-scale demonstration.
However, a last-minute intervention by the Constituency Chairman and party executives prevented the protest from taking place. Still, this did not calm the protesters, who stormed the party office, forcing their frustrations to be heard.
The protesters argue that Ashaiman, being the second-highest vote contributor to the NDC’s victory and a stronghold of the party for decades, deserved better representation in government.
“Are we only good for demonstrations?” protesters question H.E John Dramani Mahama.
The absence of key figures like Isaac Adongo, Peter Toobu, and Francis Sosu in the latest round of ministerial appointments has only fueled these questions.
Some locals are asking whether the party’s appointment strategy is based on loyalty and lobbying power, rather than merit.
