Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully extinguished a fire that broke out at the Estate Block of the University of Ghana in Accra on February 26.

The building, located near the popular Bush Canteen and used as a warehouse, was engulfed in flames around 9:00 PM.

DOI Alex King Nartey, a senior GNFS official, confirmed that fire tenders from Madina and Abelemkpe were deployed to contain the blaze, which was brought under control in less than an hour.

“Because of the gaseous nature of the substances there, we had to marshal tenders from Madina and Abelemkpe. The fire is 90% extinguished. We are now preventing further spread,” he stated. He also revealed that about 20 fridges, freezers, and spare parts were destroyed.

The incident adds to the growing number of fire outbreaks across Ghana, which have become a major concern for citizens. Earlier this year, large fires ravaged the Agbogbloshie Market and Kumasi Magazine, causing significant losses to traders and businesses.

According to recent statistics from the GNFS, Ghana recorded 5,596 fire incidents between January and November 2024, marking a 6.43% increase compared to the previous year.

The surge in outbreaks has been attributed to harsh weather conditions, non-compliance with fire safety measures, road traffic accidents, and electrical faults.

Meanwhile, GNFS Chief Fire Officer Julius Kuunuor has reiterated the need for stricter fire safety regulations and public awareness campaigns to curb the rising incidents.

Speaking at a GNFS thanksgiving service in Accra, he disclosed that as of December 18, 2024, 37 fire officers had lost their lives in the line of duty.

“It is sad to note that we have lost some of our brave men. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and friends,” he stated.

As investigations into the University of Ghana fire continue, authorities are urging the public to adhere to safety precautions to prevent further tragedies.
