The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled Nana Amofa Twumasi II, the chief of Mpasaaso No. 2, over charges of perjury and mismanagement.
The destoolment, which took place on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the Kumasi Traditional Council Meeting in the Manhyia Palace, also affected four of his stool elders.
Nana Twumasi’s troubles date back to a chieftaincy dispute between the Ekuona Clan and the Aduana Clan over the Akrodie Stool in 2024, during which he testified under oath in favor of the Aduana Clan.
However, Otumfuo later revealed that the chief had accepted inducements, including a car, money, and home renovations, in exchange for his false testimony.
Beyond perjury, additional allegations of mismanagement and dishonoring the stool were brought against Nana Twumasi by the former queen of Mpasaaso No. 2, who was subsequently reinstated.
She accused him of not being a royal, neglecting development in the town, and mishandling the sacred black stools.
“He has been reigning for 41 years yet he isn’t a royal. He has not undertaken any developmental projects. There is no palace in the town,” she stated.
Other townspeople, including a native named Kwame Tawiah, supported these claims, stating that the chief removed the sacred stools under the pretense of renovations, only for shops to emerge at the location.
The council, after hearing these testimonies, unanimously called for his removal, citing the gravity of the offenses.
In delivering the verdict, Otumfuo emphasized the importance of truthfulness in chieftaincy, warning that dishonesty dishonors the Ashanti Kingdom.
“This is a lesson to all chiefs. If you try to lie to me to misplace a stool, it dishonors us. I won’t allow that to happen in my era. Truth always precedes peace,” he declared.
Following the destoolment, Otumfuo restored the former queen to her position and instructed her to oversee the traditional selection process for a new chief.
