Ghanaians have been urged to take quick action and seek medical help if they notice a rash, as it could be a sign of Mpox. Joseph Oliver-Commey, Lead on Contact Tracing for Mpox, made the call in an interview with ABC News GH on Monday, May 19, 2025.

He emphasized the importance of early detection and responsible behavior in preventing the spread of the disease. “Seek medical care for it,” he said, stressing the need for people to act promptly if they notice symptoms.

He noted that while Mpox is not new in Ghana, the public must continue to observe precautions.

Oliver-Commey also reassured the public that the country’s health system is well-equipped to deal with the disease.

“There is no need for us to be worried at all, the health system has always been managing Mpox and managing it well,” he stated confidently.

His comments come amid renewed concern over Mpox cases in parts of the country. The Ghana Health Service has soo far recorded 4 cases.

Oliver-Commey, has outlined four critical precautions to help reduce spread at home and in our communities.

Cautions to observe:

  • Seek medical care immediately if you notice a rash
  • Cover your rash to prevent its fluid from contacting others
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Avoid unnecessary contact with others
