A tragic incident occurred at Asante Akyem Morso in the Ashanti Region early Saturday morning when 52-year-old Atta Boateng drowned in a disused well estimated to be 300 metres deep.
According to Ransford Asante, Assemblyman for the area, Mr. Boateng had descended into the well around 6:30 a.m. to retrieve a water pump, unaware that it had been removed over four years ago.
The intense heat within the unused well is believed to have overwhelmed him, weakening his strength and leaving him unable to climb out.
Bystanders attempted a rescue using a rope, but the effort ended in tragedy when the rope snapped, causing him to drown.
Traditional authorities conducted customary rites, including the pouring of libation, before the body was retrieved by personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and NADMO.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Maame Sarfoa Appiah, has since visited the community to express her condolences to the grieving family.
The body has been deposited at the Yawkwei Steward Hospital Mortuary.
