The Ghana Police Service has announced an extensive road closure and traffic diversion plan in Accra for Friday, August 15, 2025, during the Inter-Denominational and Inter-Faith State Funeral for victims of the recent military helicopter crash. The solemn event will be held at the Black Star Square, with the measures aimed at ensuring public safety and effective traffic management around the venue.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 14, 2025, the Police outlined the affected roads, warning that only vehicles bearing approved red VVIP windscreen entry stickers will be granted access to enter and park within the Black Star Square arena. The statement, signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, also urged motorists to plan their journeys early and cooperate fully with security personnel to ensure smooth traffic control.

Road closures will affect:

  • 28th February Road from the CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction.
  • Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street.
  • Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light.
  • Starlet 91 Road at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.

Traffic diversions will include:

  • Vehicles from La, Labone, and Osu on 28th February Road towards the Accra Central Business District and Ministries will be diverted onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light to link Oxford Street.
  • Motorists from Lokko Street, Osu, towards Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street in Osu.
  • Traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light.
  • Vehicles from AU Circle via Castle Road through Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be diverted onto Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to connect Abdul Nasser Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

Designated parking areas for the funeral include the forecourt of the State House, the International Conference Centre, Osu Cemetery car park, Accra Sports Stadium, the Ministries area, Ministry of Food and Agriculture car park, Marine Drive Football Park, and Afua Sutherland car park. The Police cautioned that no vehicles will be allowed to park at unauthorised locations or pass through blocked routes, with towing trucks on standby to remove abandoned or wrongly parked vehicles.

The elaborate security and traffic measures come in the wake of national mourning for the eight fallen personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces who perished in the Air Force Z-9 helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region. The state funeral is expected to draw high-profile dignitaries, members of the public, and international guests, prompting the Police to enforce strict traffic control and security protocols around the capital.
