The management of SONABEL, the power-producing company in Burkina Faso, has announced the commencement of controlled spillage of the Bagre Dam today, August 25, 2025, two days earlier than previously scheduled.
The adjustment follows a sudden increase in the dam’s filling capacity, which has now reached 90.24 per cent.
According to SONABEL, the water level stood at 234.27 meters as of August 23, 2025, prompting the urgent decision to release excess water to safeguard the dam’s integrity.
The move is expected to affect downstream communities along the White Volta and its adjoining areas in northern Ghana.
In a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency, the Water Resources Commission advised residents in affected areas to take precautionary measures.
The Commission further urged communities to strictly follow guidelines issued by local assemblies and relevant agencies to ensure safety during the spillage.
