The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has cautioned the public against reckless behaviour on the roads during this Christmas festive season.

Speaking on ABC’s In The Morning, the Public Relations Officer of the NRSA, Pearl Adusu Sateckla, urged road users to exercise restraint and prioritise their safety while celebrating.

“People should not take advantage of the festive season, drink and be walking recklessly on the road,” she cautioned, noting that pedestrian knockdowns tend to rise during major holidays due to alcohol impairment and poor road-crossing decisions.

Ms Sateckla stressed that intoxicated pedestrians are especially vulnerable on highways and other busy roads, advising against risky behaviour after heavy drinking. “Don’t cross busy roads when you drink heavily,” she warned.

She further indicated that while the NRSA continues to intensify public education and sensitisation across the country, law enforcement agencies will also be on high alert to ensure compliance with road traffic regulations.

“While we [the National Road Safety Authority] are sensitising, the Ghana Police Service will be enforcing the laws,” she said, underscoring a coordinated effort to reduce accidents and fatalities during the yuletide.

In this Christmas and New Year period, the NRSA is calling on all road users, both motorists and pedestrians, to exercise caution, follow traffic regulations, and remain vigilant, stressing that the joy of the season should never come at the cost of lives or safety.
