About 211,849 delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are voting today, Saturday, January 31, 2026, across 333 polling centres nationwide to elect a new flagbearer to lead the party in the 2028 General Elections.

The exercise, which spans all sixteen regions, will determine the party’s next presidential candidate ahead of the upcoming general election. Party officials say the process is a major test of the NPP’s internal democratic structures and organisational strength.

Delegate distribution shows significant voting strength concentrated in a few key regions. The Greater Accra Region holds the largest bloc, with 40,175 delegates, representing 18.96 per cent of the total register. The Ashanti Region follows closely with 36,626 delegates, accounting for 17.29 per cent, reaffirming its traditional status as the party’s electoral stronghold.

The Eastern Region contributes 21,843 delegates, making up 10.31 per cent of the national total. This is followed by the Central Region with 18,718 delegates (8.84 per cent) and the Western Region with 14,132 delegates, representing 6.67 per cent.

In the Volta Region, 12,589 delegates, or 5.94 per cent, are expected to participate, while the Northern Region has 12,206 delegates, accounting for 5.76 per cent. The Upper East Region contributes 8,588 delegates (4.05 per cent). The Bono and Bono East regions account for 7,871 (3.72 per cent) and 7,840 (3.70 per cent) delegates respectively.

Upper West records 6,876 delegates, representing 3.25 per cent, while Western North has 6,429 delegates (3.03 per cent). Smaller delegate numbers are recorded in the Oti Region with 5,495 delegates (2.59 per cent), Ahafo with 4,338 delegates (2.05 per cent), Savannah with 4,155 delegates (1.96 per cent), and the North East Region with 3,654 delegates, representing 1.72 per cent of the total register. The party’s diaspora vote remains marginal, with 824 delegates, accounting for just 0.39 per cent.

Five aspirants are contesting the flagbearer position. They are former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong; former Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; and former former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyepong.

Delegates voting in the primaries are drawn from various categories within the party, including national, regional, constituency and polling station executives, as well as other accredited party representatives.

Voting is scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m. and close at 2:00 p.m. Uniformed security personnel have been deployed to polling centres nationwide to maintain law and order, while officials of the Electoral Commission and party-appointed agents are overseeing the process to ensure transparency and credibility.

Party leadership has urged delegates to conduct themselves peacefully and to respect the outcome of the polls, stressing that party unity after the election will be crucial as the NPP positions itself for the next phase of the national political contest.
