Sulemana Abdul Samed, popularly known as “Awuche” and widely recognised as Ghana’s tallest man, has died after a prolonged battle with health complications.
Awuche died in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), where he had been receiving specialised treatment after his condition deteriorated due to complications associated with gigantism.
A family source confirmed his death and said arrangements were underway to bury him in Tamale in line with Islamic traditions.
Standing at 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 metres), Awuche became a well-known figure across Ghana because of his extraordinary height, which brought him national recognition and public interest.

He hailed from Gambaga in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region and initially received medical attention at the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu before being referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for further specialist care.
His health condition attracted widespread attention after appeals were made for financial support to assist with his treatment. The situation gained further public interest when concerns were raised over complications affecting one of his legs, with fears that amputation could become necessary.
Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama later stepped in to cover the cost of Awuche’s treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and pledged to support further medical intervention, including possible specialist care abroad if required.
On July 11, 2026, Mr Mahama’s aide, Rafik Mahama, announced that a comprehensive medical reassessment by doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital had ruled out the need to amputate Awuche’s left leg, contrary to earlier indications from the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.
He added that Ibrahim Mahama remained committed to supporting Awuche’s recovery and covering all necessary medical expenses.
Despite years of health struggles linked to his condition, Awuche remained hopeful and continued to inspire many through his resilience and positive outlook.
His passing has since sparked an emotional response from Ghanaians, with many taking to social media to pay tribute to him and celebrate his humility, resilience, and courage throughout his health struggles.
Many described him as a gentle and inspiring personality whose story touched lives across the country.
