Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sued Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, over statements he considers false and defamatory.
Mr Afenyo-Markin disclosed the legal action when Parliament resumed on Monday, August 24, 2026, following an increasingly heated public dispute between the two over the operations of GoldBod and reported losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
The dispute intensified after Mr Gyamfi labelled the Effutu MP an “extortionist” in response to his persistent demands for answers over the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the BoG in 2025 under the gold purchase programme.
Announcing the lawsuits in Parliament, Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had also taken legal action against media organisations that published or broadcast the alleged defamatory statements.
“I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the courts would ultimately determine the matter based on the evidence and the applicable law.
“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added.
The lawsuit adds a legal dimension to weeks of increasingly sharp exchanges between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO over the financial performance of the DGPP and responsibility for the reported losses.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has repeatedly pressed the government and GoldBod to account for the reported US$1.7 billion loss and provide clarity on the programme’s financial operations.
Mr Gyamfi, however, has rejected suggestions that GoldBod itself incurred the reported loss, insisting that the financial issues surrounding the programme should not be attributed to the institution.
With the matter now before the courts, Mr Gyamfi has maintained that he is prepared to defend the statements attributed to him.
The latest development adds a fresh twist to the growing Afenyo-Markin-Gyamfi feud, with the next chapter now set to unfold in court.
