A Senior Nursing Officer, Salomey Awity Baffoe, has been remanded in custody for two weeks by the Adenta Circuit Court 1 in connection with investigations into the anonymous TikTok account, Ghana Jollof.

The 40-year-old mother of three is alleged to be linked to the account, which has attracted attention for its criticism of government officials.

Her lawyer and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, questioned the basis for her continued detention, particularly after authorities reportedly told the court that the person behind the account is in the United Kingdom.

“Because you want to arrest Ghana Jollof, you have remanded her for two weeks. Meanwhile, you told the court that Ghana Jollof is in the UK,” he said.

Baffoe was arrested during a midnight operation at her home in Hansua in the Techiman Municipality of the Bono East Region on Sunday, September 13.

According to her brother, Antwi Francis, three individuals, including two men and a woman dressed in black uniforms, arrived at about 11:30 p.m. and identified themselves as National Security operatives.

He said the officers did not produce a warrant or explain the grounds for the arrest before taking Baffoe away.

“They didn’t show us any warrant. They didn’t state the grounds for arrest. They just told me they were taking my sister to the regional command,” Antwi said.

The arrest reportedly triggered concern within the family, with efforts initially made to establish her whereabouts.

Her mother, who lives in Jema in the Kintampo South Constituency, also received a call from a man claiming to be from the Jema BNI, who allegedly identified her daughter as the person behind Ghana Jollof.

Days before her arrest, however, Baffoe had publicly denied any association with the account.

In a video posted on social media, she appealed to the public to disregard claims linking her to Ghana Jollof.

“I want to urge the public to ignore the lies being spread about me. I am not Ghana Jollof. I am a mother. I am a trader. I have nothing to do with that account. Please, let me live my life in peace,” she said.

Following her arrest, an account claiming to be Ghana Jollof released a video in which the operator denied that Baffoe was behind the platform.

“You people are fools. You arrested the wrong person. Salomey Baffoe is not Ghana Jollof. I am Ghana Jollof. You think you can silence me by arresting an innocent woman? You are wasting your time,” the voice in the video said.

The family has also rejected any suggestion that Baffoe is politically affiliated, with spokesperson Abraham Owusu Ansah insisting that she has no connection to either of Ghana’s two major political parties.

“Our family is from Jema in the Kintampo South Constituency. The First Lady is also from this constituency. We have no political party. We are not NDC. We are not NPP. We are just a family trying to survive,” he said.

He added that the allegations against Baffoe were inconsistent with her background.

“No member of our family is trained to insult the elderly. The allegations against Salomey cannot be true.”

The case has attracted attention because of the circumstances surrounding Baffoe’s arrest and the conflicting claims over the identity of the person operating the Ghana Jollof account.

Her family is now appealing for her release as investigations continue.
