The management of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has disclosed that it is retrieving salaries from five lecturers who failed to return after their study leave.

The university has managed to recover GHS335,254 through the lecturers’ pension contributions, while the others are being pursued with the assistance of the Ghana Police Service.

This revelation was made during a Public Committee Hearing on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

The issue of lecturers not returning after study leave was highlighted in the Attorney General’s report released in July.

The report noted unrecovered salaries and expenses from staff who did not serve their bond terms after receiving salaries during their leave.

During the hearing, Hon. Kofi Adams, MP for Buem Constituency, criticized the university’s handling of the situation, emphasizing that even those who signed agreements failed to return.

KNUST Vice-Chancellor Rita Akosua Dickson expressed concern over the matter, noting the ongoing challenges the university faces in ensuring that staff members return after their study leave. “We are thinking of what we should be doing so is to ensure that going into the future these things do not happen,” she stated during the hearing.

This development follows earlier concerns raised by the Deputy Minority Leader, Mr. James Klutse, regarding the high probability of employees, especially in the Health Ministry, not returning after study leave.
