Cynthia Morrison, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Agona West, has firmly denied recent media reports suggesting she will not run for re-election as an Independent Candidate.
In a statement, she asserted, “I am still running as Independent Candidate in the parliamentary election for Agona West Constituency,” reinforcing her commitment to contest the December 7 elections despite recent media speculation.
Morrison’s decision to run independently comes after her seat was declared vacant by Speaker Alban Bagbin, along with three other MPs, all of whom are members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This declaration follows their choice to pursue Independent candidacies, which contradicts the provisions of Article 97 (g)(h) of the constitution.
Morrison was reportedly in discussions with NPP leadership, leading to speculation that she might retract her independent bid; however, she has categorically stated, “no such decision has been taken.”
Addressing concerns regarding the vacancy of her seat, the former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection revealed that the matter is being managed by her legal team.
“The issue is being handled by my lawyers,” she said, emphasizing her focus on her campaign and determination to represent the constituents of Agona West in the upcoming elections.
