A District Court in Mamponteng has granted bail to a 16-year-old student of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS), who was found with a locally manufactured pistol on campus.
Presided over by Natacha Abena Tuffour, the court set the bail at GH¢50,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be a government worker or senior staff earning at least GH¢4,000 monthly.
The student was arrested on May 14, 2025, after an assistant headmaster reportedly discovered the weapon in his possession and alerted the police.
The teenager’s stepfather, Daniel Owusu Baafi, a pastor, was also granted bail set at GH¢30,000 under similar conditions, except the required income level for his surety is GH¢3,000.
Prosecutors say the boy claimed the weapon belonged to his stepfather, prompting the latter’s arrest.
However, in his caution statement, Baafi denied ownership and asserted the pistol had belonged to his late uncle. He claimed the weapon was stored in the deceased’s room and had been retrieved by the boy.
The court did not take pleas from either accused, who were both charged under Section 192 of the Criminal Offences Act for unlawful possession of firearms.
