President Akufo-Addo has declared that the Electoral Commission of Ghana is fully prepared and equipped for the upcoming general elections set for December 7, 2024. In his final address to the United Nations, he emphasized the country’s dedication to democracy, assuring Ghanaians of a transparent electoral process.
“As my presidency draws to a close, I want to assure this assembly that the upcoming 2024 elections will be free, fair, and transparent. Ghanaians have demonstrated time and again in the last three decades their strong attachment to democracy,” he stated.
The president highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Security Services, reinforcing his confidence that the will of the Ghanaian people will be respected.
He noted the importance of maintaining electoral integrity, which has been a cornerstone of Ghana’s democratic values. “EC, supported by the Ghana Security Services, is well equipped that the will of the Ghanaian people is respected,” he affirmed.
In addition to his electoral assurances, President Akufo-Addo called for critical reforms within the United Nations Security Council, advocating for a more equitable global governance structure.
He criticized the current system as an outdated relic of the post-Second World War era that inadequately represents Africa’s 1.4 billion population.
“We cannot speak of multilateralism when the structures of global governance are rooted in an unjust and unequal order,” he argued, stressing the need for immediate and bold reforms. President Akufo-Addo is expected to further address issues like climate change in his final speech to the UN General Assembly.
