President John Dramani Mahama has appointed renowned economist Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu as the Acting Government Statistician, pending consultations with the Council of State.
The appointment was announced in a statement released on Friday, April 4, 2025, by Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
Dr. Iddrisu, a respected figure in Ghana’s economic governance space, currently serves as the Director of the Economic Strategy and Research Division at the Ministry of Finance.
In his current role, Dr. Iddrisu oversees macroeconomic analysis, economic forecasting, and policy research, as well as coordination of assessments of Ghana’s real and external sectors. His technical expertise has been instrumental in the development of the Ghana Macroeconomic Outlook Report and the formulation of the National Budget and Economic Policy.
With over a decade of senior-level experience, he has previously served as Director of the Economic Research and Forecasting Division (2013–2019) and Acting Director of the Real Sector Division (2010–2013). His broad portfolio includes representation on multiple governing boards and inter-ministerial committees where he has influenced national policy on economic strategy, governance, and development planning.
“Dr. Iddrisu brings to this role a blend of academic excellence, field experience, and dedication to public service,” the presidency stated, adding that his appointment reflects President Mahama’s vision for strengthening institutions that support sound economic governance.
The appointee also lectures part-time at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, and has consulted for global organizations such as Oxfam GB and the World Bank. He holds a PhD in International Development Studies from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo, Japan, along with postgraduate degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of Ghana.
Political analysts view this appointment as a calculated effort by the Mahama administration to bolster confidence in public institutions through credible leadership, especially within the statistical services sector which underpins major national policies and international reporting obligations.
Further updates are expected following the constitutionally mandated consultations with the Council of State.
