The Minority in Parliament has officially petitioned Speaker Alban Bagbin to intervene following what they describe as a politically motivated attempt by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to arrest the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour.
The move, which took place at the MP’s residence on Wednesday, has drawn sharp condemnation from political figures, including former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
The Minority insists the failed arrest attempt was a blatant abuse of power and a threat to parliamentary democracy.
Dr Bawumia, who visited Rev. Fordjour after the incident, did not mince words in his criticism of the action, describing it as an “unfortunate political persecution.”
He revealed that the MP was in “high spirit and undaunted,” and urged NPP supporters to stay calm and law-abiding.
“I charge all party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution,” he stated.
The NPP leader stressed that such tactics should not be allowed to fester in Ghana’s democracy.
In a direct appeal to President John Dramani Mahama, Dr Bawumia called for immediate restraint of state security agencies under his watch.
“I wish to reiterate my earlier submission to the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to immediately rein in his security operatives,” he said. Warning against the return of fear and intimidation, he added, “Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear.”
He emphasized the NPP’s unwavering commitment to democratic principles and urged all actors to uphold the rule of law.
