President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Mohammed Abdul-Salam as the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), following the resignation of Sammi Awuku.
The appointment, effective January 15, 2025, was made under Article 195 (1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 45(1) of the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722).
Abdul-Salam, who is currently the Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will serve in an interim capacity, pending advice from the NLA Board and the Public Services Commission.
In an official statement signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, Abdul-Salam was congratulated on his appointment and encouraged to lead with diligence and commitment.
His tenure begins at a critical time for the NLA, as the authority seeks to strengthen reforms and tackle challenges in the lottery sector.
Stakeholders have expressed cautious optimism about his leadership, highlighting his political experience and connections within the governing party as assets for driving progress.
Sammi Awuku, the outgoing CEO, stepped down on January 13, 2025, citing his recent election as Member of Parliament for Akuapem North in the Eastern Region.
Awuku, a former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stated his intention to dedicate more time to his parliamentary responsibilities.
