The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its decision to withdraw from all Media General platforms nationwide, citing repeated instances of bias, unprofessionalism, and misconduct in the moderation of its political discussions.
The move, confirmed in a press release on Monday, January 27, 2025, comes after months of attempts to engage the media house to address the party’s concerns.
The statement, signed by Richard Ahiagbah, NPP’s Director of Communications, declared that the party could no longer remain on the platforms after the production team, hosts, and management of Media General failed to act on issues raised by the party. “We announce that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) withdraws from all Media General platforms,” the statement began.
The NPP outlined that despite multiple engagements and assurances from Media General since 2023, they continued to observe biased and abusive behavior, particularly on political programs.
One of the most egregious incidents highlighted by the party was a guest making inflammatory remarks against former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on a program hosted by Madam Keminni Amanor, where the host reportedly did not intervene or object to the insult.
“The said remarks about the former president were unnecessary and in poor taste… yet the host condoned it,” said Ahiagbah.
The statement also criticized the political shows on TV3, accusing them of unfair paneling. According to the NPP, the platform regularly features panels with known political affiliations that favor one party, leaving the NPP’s representatives outnumbered. “There is no genuine desire to hear the other side,” the party lamented. “We just need to tick a box,” they added, alleging the shows were more about promoting certain viewpoints rather than offering balanced political discourse.
The party urged the media house to return to its roots as a balanced platform serving the information needs of Ghanaians, instead of adopting an “activist stance” and “seeking to instruct Ghanaians on what to think.”
