Parliament has officially confirmed the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, in the Netherlands.
In a statement signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the House disclosed that the legislator was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam after arriving in the European country.
The statement indicated that the matter has already been escalated to the highest levels of parliamentary leadership, with efforts underway to gather full details surrounding the incident.
“It has come to the attention of Parliament that, the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong has been detained at the Schipol Airport, Amsterdam in the Netherlands,” the statement said.
According to Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Speaker and leadership of the House are currently engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague over the development.
“The Rt Hon Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement added.
Although authorities are yet to disclose the exact reasons behind the detention, sources close to the MP claim he travelled from Ghana on Saturday evening and landed in Amsterdam on Sunday morning, where he was reportedly intercepted by security personnel before completing immigration procedures.
The incident has reignited public attention over earlier allegations that linked the MP to suspected financial crimes and human trafficking-related activities — allegations he has consistently denied.
Claims circulating in recent months alleged that US law enforcement agencies had previously investigated activities connected to an African restaurant and supermarket business in Chicago reportedly associated with the MP.
According to the allegations, the business was suspected to have been used as a channel for moving fraudulent funds connected to individuals currently serving prison sentences in the United States.
The reports further claimed that the FBI monitored the operations for years following an alleged raid on the premises, during which several women — said to be Ghanaian-British citizens — were reportedly arrested over multiple bank accounts allegedly used in transferring funds.
Despite the allegations, Kwame Ohene Frimpong earlier dismissed the claims as malicious attacks intended to tarnish his image.
“There are people who ignore all the positive things I have been doing. Instead, they focus on spreading lies and wishing me ill,” he stated.
As of now, neither Dutch authorities nor Ghanaian officials have released additional information regarding the detention or any possible charges.
