President John Dramani Mahama has directed the full restoration of Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) in the administration of schools, particularly at the secondary level.
The move comes after growing concerns from parents over the exclusion of PTAs in recent years.
Speaking on June 11 at the Jubilee House during a courtesy call by members of the Teachers’ Fund of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the President emphasized the importance of community involvement in school governance.
“Give communities a say in how their schools are run. That’s why I felt very scandalized when PTAs were virtually shoved aside… I believe that PTA participation must be fully restored,” he said.
The visit by the Teachers’ Fund, which boasts a portfolio of four billion cedis and investments such as Avianz Cargo, highlighted the need for stronger government collaboration to enhance teacher welfare.
President Mahama’s remarks reflect a broader reform agenda initiated at the start of his administration, including a review of the free SHS policy.
Consultant and economist Kwame Pianim noted that the President’s posture signals a determined effort to leave a legacy of lasting educational reform.
