In Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, a total of 12 individuals have been charged in connection with an attempted coup, as announced by the Sierra Leonean government. The charges brought against them include treason, misprision of treason, and harboring, aiding, and abetting the enemy, according to a public notice from the Ministry of Information and Civic Education released on Tuesday.
The charged individuals consist of former police and correctional officers, all of whom have legal representation, as stated in the notice. The government anticipates that additional individuals will face charges in the coming days.
The attempted coup occurred on November 26, 2023, when armed individuals attacked a military barracks, a prison, and other locations in Freetown. The government reported that more than 20 people were killed in the aftermath, characterizing the incident as a failed coup attempt.
